Who we are
Born and raised in Western Pennsylvania, Samantha Farabee, DVM, has been obsessed with horses since she was about 2 years old. She first swung a leg over a pony at the age of 6 and has not stopped since then. Her first experiences were taking lessons at a local Saddlebred show barn, then developed into leasing a Tennessee Walker for a number of years while riding on her high school’s IEA and college IHSA teams. These lessons introduced her to the world of hunter/jumpers. She graduated from Washington & Jefferson College in 2014 and promptly travelled to St. Kitts and Nevis to enroll at Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine, filling her clinical year at Cornell University School of Veterinary Medicine. Her internship was completed at Performance Equine, a local lameness-oriented racetrack practice where she works to this day (check them out here!)
Tanglewood was a family-run hobby farm until 2024, when Dr. Farabee began taking on project racehorses in earnest for training and rehabilitation. Additionally, the farm functions as a small hospital, allowing for patients who require a little more attention to receive it. Tanglewood is prepared to offer IV fluid administration, wound and laceration repair, joint injection and flushing, as well as ample stalls for horses requiring limited mobility and rest. Pastures are available upon request, and range from steep wooded areas to flat grass- plenty of room for horses to move (or not move) yet still allowing them to have as normal a routine as possible while under hospitalization.
Current rates are as follows:
Level 1: $25/day/horse
Ideal for horses requiring an experienced set of eyes on them. Rate includes 24/7 hay and fresh water, grain 2x per day, and stall or paddock access (weather permitting).
Level 2: $50/day/horse
This level encompasses horses that need more attention to detail, including horses on medications (antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, other medications relating to hospital care) as well as bandages. Rate includes 24/7 hay and fresh water, grain 2x per day, stall access, and hay nets. Examples of horses in Level 2 include those with eye injuries (and an SPL system), horses on intravenous antibiotics, certain wounds/bandages/casts, horses with impaction colic. Medication costs are separate fees.
Level 3: $100/day/horse
These are the horses who need a hospital, stat! Intended for horses needing intensive or critical care and monitoring, this level includes continuous IV fluid administration, indwelling catheters, horses in isolation, horses with pneumonia, mare and foal care
Recognizing the need for equine emergency services in Washington and Greene counties, Dr. Farabee is looking to expand her services to help all equines in the area that she can.
